EBSIS Krasnodar ('Oscar-II') class Guided Missile Submarine:
Few people actually consider the EBSIS submarine forces when they look at the EBSIS Navy and the EBSIS Navy itself is often dismissed as not being a powerful force while the reality is quite different. Before the coming of the Global War, the Soviet guided missile submarines were considered quite dangerous to surface vessels. The Krasnodar is known by the RDF as the Oscar II which is the same designation as was used by NATO before the Global War. The submarine class did massive damage to several NATO battle groups including the sinking of two carriers. Virtually all Oscar II class missile submarines were sunk during the war and only two remained by the end of the conflict. There was some discussion about building a new class of submarine but instead it was decided to rebuild the two remaining vessels of the class and construct more of the same class. The New EBSIS submarine forces are made up completely of Oscar and Akula class submarines with the exception of the CVS Iapetus.
The refit of the vessels were very simple. The design was already very rugged and composite armor plates were simply fitted to the submarine under the acoustic tiles. Like on modified Akula class submarines, the armor plates were derived from those mounted on the CVS Iapetus. The design was huge by most standards and could take the modifications with little problem. The vessels have twenty four shipwreck class surface to surface missiles and eight torpedo tubes. Both missile and torpedo warheads were replaced by more powerful warheads copied from RDF equipment and can inflict massive damage. These submarines are considered a direct threat against RDF surface groups.
Like other EBSIS Submarines, these vessels require large crews. The EBSIS also have a similar problem to that of the Soviet Union it replaced. That is that enlisted crews have minimal training compared to the enlisted crews of other vessels. This mean a much higher reliance on officers and of the normal compliment of 107, 48 are officers.
Like the Akula class fast attack submarine, the EBSIS is continuing production of the Oscar II class Guided missile submarine. There is believed to be several improvements in the design but intelligence on the vessel is limited. The shipyards have covered construction slips where the submarines are being built and information is carefully controlled.
Model Type: Project 949A
Class: Nuclear Powered Guided Missile Submarines [EBSIS Class:
Atomnie Podvodnie Kreysery 1 Ranga (APKR)]
Crew: 107 Total (48 Officers and 59 Enlisted)
M.D.C. by Location:
| 25.6 Inch (650 mm) Internal Torpedo Tubes (4 - Bow): | 35 each | |
| 21 inch (533 mm) Internal Torpedo Tubes (4 - Bow): | 25 each | |
| P-700/SS-N-19 Missile Hatches (12 - Sides): | 160 each | |
| Main Sail: | 475 | |
| [1] Bow Planes (2): | 100 each | |
| [2] Propellers (2): | 120 | |
| [3] Main Body: | 1,800 |
Notes:
[1] Destroying the submarines bow planes will reduce the submarines
ability to change depths but will not eliminate it. It also makes it difficult
for the submarines crew to control the submarine giving a penalty of -25%
to all piloting rolls.
[2] Destroying one propeller reduces top speed of vessel by one third.
Destroying both of the submarine's Propellers causes serious problem. The
submarine will no longer be able to use forward momentum and the bow planes
to keep the submarine level. It is recommended that ballast takes are immediately
blown so submarine comes to surface.
[3] Depleting the M.D.C. of the main body destroys the submarine's
structural integrity, causing it to sink. If the submarine is underwater,
the entire crew will die unless protected by environmental armors that
can withstand the pressure that the submarine is under. If on the surface,
there are enough flotation devices and inflatable life rafts to accommodate
everyone aboard.
Speed:
Surface: 18.4 mph (16.0 knots/ 29.7 kph)
Underwater: Cruise: 32.2 mph (32 knots / 51.9 mph), Maximum:
36.8 mph (32 knots / 59.3 mph)
Maximum Depth: Normal: 984.2 feet (300 meters), Crush:
1,640.4 feet (500 meters)
Range: Effectively Unlimited due to nuclear engines (needs to
refuel every 10 years and requires maintenance as well). Ship carries 4
months of supplies on board.
Statistical Data:
Draft: 30.2 feet (9.2 meters) surfaced
Width: 59.7 feet (18.2 meters)
Length: 508.5 feet (155 meters)
Displacement: 14,700 tons surfaced and 24,000 tons submerged
Cargo: Submarine is very cramped, 40 tons of nonessential equipment
and supplies. Each enlisted crew member has a small locker for personal
items and uniforms. Ship's officers have more space for personal items.
Most of the ship's spaces are taken up by extra torpedoes, weapons, and
engines.
Power System: Steam turbines, 2 OK-650B reactor, 2 shaft, 47,600
shp each
Market Price: Not Available.
